Quality education and vocational training are key to reversing cycles of poverty and dependence. As a result, SMI puts a strong emphasis on creating academic and vocational opportunities for the youth. To this end, SMI is partnered with the Alpha and Omega Vocational Secondary School (AOVSS) in Kiburara, Uganda to help with tuition assistance, provide vocational training for students, and help the school move toward sustainability. To this end, SMI has purchased a 6-acre parcel of land near the school for students to receive hands-on experience in crop and animal production. The output from the land will provide nutritious meals for students and lower the school food budget. In addition, profits from crop and animal sales can be used to lower tuition costs.
One of SMI’s primary goals is to reduce the dropout rate at the school, especially among girls. In many cases parents must withdrawal their children from the school during the semester due to a lack of funds between growing seasons. As a result, the school dropout rate during a given semester can exceed 30%, denying these children a quality, gospel-centered education.
Your financial support to SMI can help to ensure that the poorest students at the school receive a quality education without the need to withdrawal from school due to a lack of funds.
